Looking back at the launch of MTV in 1981, hyped then as the death knell of radio, it’s easy to see just how wrong we were, The New York Daily News David Hinckley writes. “In 2010, the age of iPods, Facebook, Twitter and viral culture, most fans still get their new pop music from the radio. Even better, most fans still listen to songs first and watch them second,” Hinckley writes.

The luger who died is Nodar Kumaritashvili, and he was a 21 year old Georgian athlete with a gold medal dream in his heart. His hopes were to walk away from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics remembered, and those hopes came true. However, he will not be remembered for getting a gold medal. He will be forever remembered as the luger who died during the 2010 winter games. Coming out of the second to last turn of the Whistler track during a training exercise, Nodar Kumaritashvili failed to compensate. As a result, he lost control of his sled. He flew over top of a retaining wall and hit an unpadded metal pole. At the time of his death, he is said to have been going a little under 90 mph.

Queen Latifah, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Pharrell Williams co-hosted Friday night’s S-O-S: Saving Ourselves, Help for Haiti telethon, which aired live from the Miami Airlines Arena in Miami on B-E-T, Centric and V-H-1. Wyclef Jean kicked off the show with a performance of “Hold On,” and sang part of the verses in his native Patois. He was later joined by Akon on their duet “Sweetest Girl.” Jasmine Sullivan and Mary J. Blige duetted on “I’m Gonna Make It,” then Mary did a solo performance of U-2′s “One.” Robin Thicke performed his song “Dreamworld” as well as a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy Mercy Me” with India Arie. Nas and Damien Marley performed their collaboration “Only the Strong.” Monica was joined by fellow Atlantan Laducris on her “Still Standing.” Chris Brown did his ballads “Crawl” and “With You.” Gospel favorite Kirk Franklin was joined by Arie, Sullivan and Chrisette Michele on “Are You Listening.” The show’s finale was a Brian McKnight-led rendition of “Lean on Me” featuring all the night’s performers, which also included Busta Rhymes and Keri Hilson. Phone operators included Farnsworth Bentley, Common, Sean Paul, Spike Lee and Mike Tyson. Among those who made introductions on stage were Gabrielle Union, Serena Williams and Bill Clinton. The show was interspersed with footage of the devastation in Haiti as well as the efforts being made to help, such as providing clean water and medical attention.

More than 80 of the biggest stars in pop, hip-hop, country and rock came together last night at Henson Studios in Hollywood, California to record a 25th anniversary version of “We Are The World” for Haitian earthquake relief.

Participating performers include Celine Dion, Wyclef Jean, Carlos Santana, Zac Brown, Barbra Streisand, Lil Wayne, Pink, Kanye West, the Jonas Brothers, Akon, Julianne Hough, Jennifer Hudson, Tony Bennett, Snoop Dogg, Beach Boys‘ Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, Justin Bieber, Toni Braxton, Usher, Josh Groban, Heart, Rob Thomas, The Fray‘s Isaac Slade, actors Vince Vaughn and Jeff Bridges, and others. Janet Jackson is scheduled to record her part today in Atlanta. The new recording will reportedly featured the recorded voice of Michael Jackson, who co-wrote the original song with Lionel Richie.

Guiding the sessions are Quincy Jones, the same super-producer who oversaw the recording 25 years ago at the same studio, then known as A-and-M. The original recording featured Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Diana Ross and others performing the song for Ethiopian famine relief. Joining Jones in producing the new version are Wyclef Jean, Lionel Richie and Grammy-winning producer RedOne.

The Grammys took place Sunday Night January 31 at 8p ET from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It was ladies’ night at last night’s Grammy Awards. Beyonce‘s nickname is Queen B, but last night it could have been Queen G, as she took six awards, including Song of the Year for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” That’s the most trophies garnered by a woman in a single night in the show’s 52-year history.If Beyonce was Grammy‘s queen, Taylor Swift was the night’s princess, taking four awards, including Album of the Year for Fearless – even if she struggled to stay on key during her performance with Fleetwood Mac‘s Stevie Nicks. Here are the winners:

Beyonce took home six; Taylor Swift won four. Black Eyed Peas, Kings of Leon and Jay-Z each won three.

Pants on the Ground…A Ripoff?

TMZ.com is reporting American Idol overnight sensation “General” Larry Platt isn’t the first person to sing “Pants on the Ground” at least not officially. The Detroit rap group The Green Brothers who gained moderate succes in the mid 90s released a similar song Back Pockets on the Floor” in 1996 is now coming forward saying the song was their idea.–
The group claims their lift-up-your-pants jam has “the same intent, idea and in part the same message” as the The Generals version. I heard the song and it’s available on line. The words are different but the concept IS similar. Problem is General Platt just sang what could be considered his version of the song. What do the Green Brothers seek? Financial damages. According to Platt, he didn’t make any money off the song. If recognition is what they seek, it is wise for them put out a pre emptive strike at this time and say the original idea was theirs. Since their song “Back Pockets on the Floor” was never a hit, It might be in The Green Brothers best interest to do a collaborative with “General” Larry Platt as soon as possible.
